Thing #16: Wikis

Wikiwiki is a Hawaiian word that means quick!, or quickly! Spit spot! Pronto!  Wikis were given that name because they can be created and edited and grown and changed very quickly and easily.  In this exercise, you will learn about wikis in general, and visit some wikis created by other libraries.

Library Wikis

As the use of wikis has grown over the last few years, libraries all over the country are using them to collaborate and share knowledge. Among their uses are research or subject guide wikis, book review wikis, conference wikis and even library best practices wikis. They can also be used for instruction manuals, recipe collections, library or community histories, or anything else you can write and organize.  The key word is collaboration: you don't have to do it alone!  Others can help by adding content, editing, and organizing - many hands make wiki work!

Some of the benefits that make wikis so attractive are:

  • Anyone who registers can add, edit or delete content, and if the wiki is unrestricted, unregistered viewers can make changes, too.
  • Tracking tools within wikis allow you to easily see what been changed and by whom.
  • Earlier versions of a page can be viewed and reinstated when needed
  • Authors and editors do not need to know HTML in order to apply styles to text or add and edit content.

So let's get started, wikiwiki!
